RED the company that changed the rules of the HD camcorder business has launched a new line of RED Epic and Scarlet modular cameras ($3,750 - $53,000), designed to let you flexibly configure the right gear by combining a “Brain” ranging from 3K to 28K pixels and then adding lenses and other modules to create a totally customized camera.

RED’s new line of professional cameras can be configured as both a super-high-end digital camera or highly versatile HD camcorder. The company claims that the RED Epic/Scarlet system offers 1,048,576 possible combinations, with modules for both Canon and Nikon lens mounts offered.

Of course, there’s the usual complement of leading-edge features, including 1080p monitoring, a host of inputs and outputs, remote control, and much more. And that 28K resolution translates to 26 megapixels, equivalent to 28,000 x 9,334, or enough resolution to make your eyes bleed.
