In 1984, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager pioneered the design-hotel concept, with New York’s Morgans. Schrager spent $200 million making over the 82-year-old Gramercy Park Hotel, which opened in August 2006. Schnabel took the Gramercy in a totally different direction relying on a sumptuous, not a minimalist, decor.
Gramercy Park features the stunning Rose Bar, which features a Schnabel-designed cast-resin chandelier suspended by bronze chains and a green silk velvet wall seat that runs the length of the room. The equally opulent rooftop club is pictured above. Below is a picture of the Gramercy’s neo-expressionist room.

For his latest oeuvre, New York’s Gramercy Park hotel, Schrager chose neo-expressionist Julian Schnabel to take the Gramercy in a new direction, which relyies on a sumptuous, not a minimalist, decor.
